Abstract The [...] article has a twofold aim: First, it should provide an overview of the German situation and what can be learned from it. To this end, it describes the central characteristics of the German educational system (see section 1) and reports central research findings, primarily from just one of the German states, addressing the fairness of access to higher education (see section 2). This overview will also highlight the limitations of currently available datasets. Second, it aims to draw the reader's attention to the potential of a major research project in Germany that has many more general affordances for the community of researchers. Specifically, the authors shall describe the main features of the German National Educational Panel Study, a nationwide longitudinal study that assesses competence levels along with many other variables (see section 3). Because access to this dataset will be readily available for researchers from all over the world, it will soon become possible to address many research questions that simply cannot be answered with the currently available datasets.
