Abstract In the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), the orthography competency is measured as a stage-specific supplement in secondary school from Grades 5 to 9 and in elementary school in Grade 4. In this paper, the test and its theoretical framework in Grade 4 are introduced, followed by a description of the data, of data analysis, and its results for the Scientific Use File. The aim of this Technical Report is to provide a description that will enable the scientific community to understand and use the data in an appropriate way. In doing so, the paper seeks to clarify in advance any potential questions that may arise concerning the data and to motivate data users to further analyze the data of the orthography competency in Grade 4.
